Who created it?
It was established by the great companion Amr Ibn Al-Aas in the year 21 AH / 641 AD after he conquered Egypt in the year 20 AH / 640 AD by order of Caliph Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, and he founded the city of Fustat, the capital of the country at that time, where the leader received from the caliph a royal order to build a large mosque inside the city, as it was 50 cubits long, equivalent to 25 meters, and the width of the mosque was 30 cubits.

The mosque was used at the beginning as a meeting place for the Muslims and the forces of Amr ibn al-Aas, and they were a minority at that time.

It's place
At that time, the mosque was overlooking the eastern side of the Nile River, and with the passage of time, the course of the Nile River gradually changed towards the western side, even after a distance of 500 meters from the original position of the mosque.
When the Muslim leader, Amr ibn al-Aas arrived in Cairo in the year 640 AD, the first thing he undertook was to build the mosque, on the ruins of the fortress of Babylon on the banks of the Nile, in the area that is now known as Old Cairo It was originally built using palm trunks, bricks, and palm leaves were used to make the roof. The first version of the mosque had an area of about 29 meters in length and 17 meters in width, the mosque was subjected to many architectural changes, and its area at the time of its construction was very small, simplicity prevails in it, as it was built on legs of palm trunks, and was covered with newspapers, then the total area of the mosque gradually increased until it reached its current shape. Although the current building dates back to the twentieth century, it still retains the character of early Islamic architecture, nothing remains of the old architecture and decorations except the courtyard of the mosque and behind it the qibla portico. In addition, you will find a small dome in the middle of the courtyard, as the age of the dome dates back to 1212 AH.
In the year 1211 AH
Prince Muhammad Bey completely demolished the mosque and rebuilt it in a completely different way from the old architectural designs and decorations.

And the first porticoes of the columns were erected in the year 827 AD, when it obtained its permanent shape, which is still so far, and its last renovation was in the year 1875 AD.
One of the most important updates that the Amr Ibn al-Asi Mosque in Fustat acquired was made by the ruler Abdullah Ibn Taher during the reign of the Caliph al-Ma’mun, as the mosque reached an area of 120 meters in length and 112 meters in width.
Was the mosque destroyed before?
The mosque was destroyed as a result of the Fustat fire that occurred in 1175 AD, When the city of Fustat was burned by Shawar, the vizier of the Fatimid caliph; to prevent the Crusaders from invading Fustat, and the fire lasted 54 days; Therefore, Salah al-Din rebuilt and renovated it in 1179 AD, and in 1906 during the reign of Khedive Abbas Helmy II, when the mosque was completely restored.
What can you see in the mosque of Amr ibn al-Asi in Fustat?
In the Amr Ibn al-Aas Mosque, you can see many landmarks. In the southern corner of the mosque, you will see the qiblah of the portico, where there is a mausoleum under the dome, and it may belong to Abdullah Ibn Amr Ibn al-Aas.
